The Contest of the Most Beautiful Book
Since 1993, the
Lithuanian Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Lithuanian Artists
Association, Vilnius Art Academy and the OLF, hold the contest of the
most aesthetic and best printed books or other publications of the past
year. The idea behind the contest is to motivate and encourage artists
and publishers to aspire for a nicer product.
It is up for the publishers to present their publications for the contest.
The highly reputed Lithuanian artists and specialists in book art sit
on evaluation panel. Evaluated are graphic design of the book, illustrations
and typographic aspects, including book layout, relationship of textual
and visual material, matter quality, choice of paper and binding, quality
of print and binding and other. The publications presented for the contest
go through initial stage of selection of those eligible for the contest;
nominated books are divided into categories. The second stage is voting
by a secret ballot.
From 1993 to 2002, ten such contests took place. It is a serious test
for the artists, publishers and printers. Since 1995, a catalogue of
The Most Beautiful Books of the Year, printed from the Culture
Ministrys funds, is presented at the International Vilnius Book
Fair, on the eve of which the contest is held.
