Prague Quadriennial 2003

by Julijus Lozoraitis

At the world scenography and theatre architecture exhibition 2003 Prague Quadrennial held in Prague, the national projects section had 50 countries representing their achievements in scenic design. The central hall of the pavilion featured a multilevel scaffolding-type construction with simultaneous performances going on at different levels. Mostly photographs of the theatre performances and set design pieces as well as blueprints of theatre costumes were presented; though the shows of theatre costumes failed the intended effect. Lithuania was represented by Jonas Arčikauskas and his set design for the play “The Raven“ in the Russian Theatre of Lithuania, Medilė Šiaulytytė’s work for the play “The Very Beginning of the Beginning” with the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, and Jūratė Paulėkaitė with her scenic designs for the productions by Oskaras Koršunovas: “The Face of Fire”, “The Meister and Margarita“, “The Little One”, and “Oedipus the King“. Dmitrijus Matvejevas featured photographs of different Lithuanian set design projects.
The British became the recipients of the main award, “Golden Triga”. Participating critics and commentators stated that the part of the national exhibitions of stage art was more diversified compared to the one representing trends and schools in set and costume design. Vilnius Art Academy, including teachers and students, also attended the event to feature their achievement in stagecraft.
