Painting in Smoke

by Milda Žvirblytė

Since 1998, the painter Jonas Gasiūnas has been actively using the medium of the trace of a burning candle.
It is a mixed version of painting, difficult to tell from usual drawing and writing. The flame of a burning candle leaves a contour of soot on the surface of the canvas covered in several layers of paint. The multiple layers of colour are equally significant for the artist. They look like quotations from the past.
This technique associates with graffiti. On the other hand, it enables the artist to reinterpret different images (historic figures, characters of pop culture, and menacing images of the contemporary world) and universal symbols in a personal way and envelop them in an aura of mysterious meanings. This technique associates also with Gasiūnas’ principle to depict a concrete object, yet simultaneously claim that it does not exist.
