Viktorija Daujotytė's essay "Close relations: both from afar and from deep" is not an article that can be calmly broken down into theses, arguments and conclusions. His thought moves as memory moves: from from word to image, from song to person, from School songs celebrations to the animals seen in childhood, from natural culture to of the father who walked barefoot through the cold rain. One connection awakens another. that, what is distant in time turns out to be near; what is near gains depth.
Therefore, the post-hierarchical analysis of this text cannot be mechanical. Kinship is not an institutional process that is sufficient to "optimize", and memory is not a collection of data that can be accessed without losing meaning cause to the platform. In this area, the first duty of thought is no rearrange but hear. You can only ask what Daujotytė is after hearing testimony speaks of community, tradition and such social order, in which people are united not by instructions from above, but by what is felt from within commitment to each other.
Text context: summer consonances and returning memory
Essay appears in several 2026 at the intersection of summer experiences. Daujotyte connects the XXV Natural Culture Seminar in Juodonyse, Donatos Katkaus reflection on the music of Felix Bajor and the Festival of Pupils' Songs in Vilnius. These events are not separate cultural news for her. They ring as one sign that natural cultural forms - song, chant, dance, ritual, dialect intonation, common presence - not alone remnants of the past.
A particularly important word in the essay is dolls. Its meaning is gone is clearly translatable, but it functions as a deeply preserved sonority a form that evokes memory, longing and a sense of togetherness. For the mother tradition is alive not when an old form is copied exactly, but when when her energy is rewritten in a new voice and a new body. Therefore young the old songs sung by the people are not museum repetitions. This confirmation that the thread of culture has not yet broken.
The second layer of text comes from what happened at the Natural Culture Seminar interview with Giedre Šmitiene and Kristina Chlastauskiene. Questions about family ties prompt Daujotytė to return to her childhood experiences: to family and community where people knew what to do, often without even waiting for instructions. If grains are poured - to support bag. If a fire is lit, take care of it. If the cow is thirsty, water it. Lift the smaller, support the weaker. Not only rites can be seen through the veils order, but also those for whom it is most difficult; do not forget even out of the way dog that doesn't get out.
This knowledge was not spelled out in the rules. It was passed on living together This is precisely why the essay is not only about family feelings, but also about a disappearing form of social cognition.
What in this text especially valuable
The connection is shown as action
Daujotytė does not narrow the proximity to emotion. The connection means that a person notices what the other person needs and does what needs to be done at that time. Care is specific: support, bring, water, listen, to come, to stay near. In this simplicity lies a strong ethical thought - community does not begin with general declarations, but with sensitivity for the situation.
Memory is perceived as commitment
One of the most sensitive images of the essay is taken from Justin Marcinkevičius memory: the father brings the child food, and then, in the cold autumn rain in the rain, he takes off his shoes and returns home barefoot. Daujotytė says: see and to keep in memory, to commit to that image - the bare feet of the father through cold rain
Memory here is not a sentimental repository of the past. To remember means allow another person's efforts to influence your current life. Connection with remains dead not because the past is suspended but because it participates in our moral imagination.
Tradition understood as a living re-creation
The essay rejects two extremes: both the old blind copying and of the belief that modernity begins only after breaking the connection with what was. Archaic dolls can enter modern poetry, old dance - to new choreography, Čiurlionis - to current musical and visual language. Tradition lives on through creative extension.
This is a very important condition for the vitality of culture. The form that is allowed only to repeat, it freezes. A form that no one recognizes anymore disappears. A living form must be both recognizable and transformable.
Proximity limit recognized
Daujotytė sensitively warns that openness has limits. She urges do not rush to judge loved ones, try to understand their situations, do not touch pains, until the person opens himself, and after he opens, first of all listen, don't attack to give advice.
This attitude is especially important in a culture where confession is public sometimes turned into a spectacle. Proximity does not give rights to another person. Listening is not extracting information. Real connection is left to the other the ability to both speak and remain silent.
Post-hierarchical perspective: not to abolish the vertical, but to separate it from power
Daujotytė claims that the ontologically most important is architectonics the principle is vertical. In her imagination, a low point and a height, the ground and spirit, farmhouse, and sanctuary are not opposites—there is an ascension between them. This statement should not be hastily considered a hierarchical order defense
Post-hierarchy does not have to deny height, authority, respect or spiritual pursuit. It denies something else: a permanent pyramid of people in which the superior, by reason of his position, acquires the right to judge for the inferior existing Spiritual vertical and management hierarchy are not the same. The greatness of Čiurlionis' work can lift us up, but the work is for us does not command. A mother's blessing may accompany, but it is not administrative team. The memory of the dead can oblige, but it does not work through sanction.
The natural community described by Daujotytė works in many ways post-hierarchically: the required action arises from the situation itself, and competence appears where it is needed at the time. One knows how singing, another - how to prepare a sleigh, third - how to comfort, fourth - that you need to take care of the animal. No one needs to rule the whole. General order arises from mutual attention, acquired knowledge and harmony of actions.
It is not a community without structure. Its structure lies in relationships, in memory, ritual and . She less visible than the institutional scheme, but no less real.
Where caution is necessary addition
Natural community can nurture, but it can also oppress. Daujotyte herself mentions that the community has a hard time with those seeking separation, into the frame unfit people. Self-evident order is not for everyone equally safe. What goes without saying can be caring implication, but may also be an implicit demand for obedience. Inherited the duty may support the weaker, but may fall disproportionately per family member. An appeal to understanding parents can open the way for forgiveness, but should not deny a person's right to name what he experienced wrong.
Here, sensitivity requires maintaining both truths. Relatives should not easily turned into defendants in open court. However, for a person a person who has experienced violence or humiliation cannot be charged with the duty of silence by mere kinship or tradition. Understanding is not an offense justification, and dismissal is not a procedural obligation. Sometimes the connection preserves closeness; sometimes a person is saved by a clear boundary.
A post-hierarchical community cannot return to a past in which everyone just "knew what to do". It has to take over from natural culture sensitivity and mutual responsibility, but at the same time recognize the voice of the individual, consent and the right to disagree with the community's expectation.
How the wisdom of close ties could continue in the posthierarchy
Close connections do not need to be outsourced to the solution platform. None technology won't replace coming when you miss, a hand on your shoulder or calm presence with a sick person. But can help where intimate concerns collide with public ones institutions: when deciding the care of old parents, loneliness, nursing, community spaces, cultural transmission or intangible heritage questions.
In such areas, not only a model developed by experts would be important the voice of the majority alone. A would be needed.
In the first stage, different experts - nurses, social workers workers, anthropologists, psychologists, cultural researchers - together with people with direct experience would refine the possible solutions. A person of experience here is not an illustration of an expert's conclusion; his knowledge is a specific competence. could protect from the power of positions, names and institutional prestige.
In the second stage, the people who will be directly affected by the decision – cared for persons, their relatives, local community, service providers - would choose from prepared, reasoned alternatives. That would not be the solution neither brought down from above nor left unorganized by opinions amount
However, in the area of intimate testimony, there must be an even stricter rule principle: not everything that can be collected must be collected; not everything what is said may be forwarded; not every memory has to become public cultural resource. The narrator must retain the right to determine the limits of your narrative, withdraw consent and choose silence. Collective memory is ethical only when it does not submerge the individual.
From inherited ritual to consciously created connection
In the modern city, we can no longer expect everyone to automatically know how to be around Many shared rituals have weakened, families live far away from each other, and care is increasingly handed over to professionals institutions. However, it does not follow that the connection must disappear. It is available consciously recreate in small forms: shared meals, singing, story evenings, intergenerational workshops, neighborhood help, in a time that is not measured by productivity alone.
Most importantly, these forms should not be dismissed as mandatory "tradition program". In Daujotytė's text, tradition is alive because it is echoes in man. In a post-hierarchical culture, community can to offer space, repertoire, memory markers and the opportunity to participate, but must not claim an equal relationship with them. One will sing, the other will listen, the third will find a connection through a garden, a craft, a language or caring for an old person a person Commonality does not have to eliminate different modes of closeness.
Understood in this way, posthierarchy is not a cold tradition proceduralization. It is an effort to create conditions so that care can arise from the connection between people, and the institution would help him, but his would not be appropriated. Common knowledge must remain alive: it is not transmitted alone instruction, but also by being together.
End: Maybe they already see, do you hear
Daujotytė ends the essay by listening to young voices singing old ones songs: "Maybe they already see, hear? Maybe even more than us?" This posture is important. The older generation is not the only meaning here custodian It leaves the possibility that the young will not only take over, but also will hear differently - maybe even more.
In this place, Daujotytė's thought comes close to the deepest post-hierarchy meanings. Tradition is passed down not because the future would repeat the past. It is passed so that the other can answer his own voice A relationship persists not because someone orders it to be maintained, but because that a person recognizes in another what he wants to be responsible for.
Proximity does not always mean short distance. Sometimes it's an ability from afar hear an old voice. Depth does not always mean mystery. Sometimes it is a simple, timely action: support, lift, come, to listen Such actions can lead to a culture that is not needed to rule from above because it is based on people's ability to be with each other close
A connection remains not when the past dictates it, but when it does the voice awakens our own responsibility.
