PETITION TO SUPPORT CITIZENS FIGHTING FOR THE PUBLIC SPACE IN VILNIUS

I wish to hereby express my solidarity with citizens in Vilnius who are going through painful challenges of globalisation.

The case of “Lithuania” cinema theatre is a shocking example of how transnational investment groups, in pursuit of their quick profit interest, with the help of cheaply approachable local clerks, devastate and destroy public spaces and goods, utterly neglecting local traditions of culture and heritage as well as requirements of environment-friendly development.

By signing up this Petition, I am joining the appeal of the organised cinema-goers in Vilnius to international community, and their address to the Lithuanian Government and UNESCO in a hope that the public space at issue, by now a symbol of public resistance and a site for community meetings, can be rescued for future generations.

I approve of the efforts by Lithuanian cinema-lovers to defend public cultural goods and to seek justice in court.

I hereby endorse the appeal of Vilnius cinema-goers to the country’s Government and the Vilnius Municipality to take steps needed in order to resolve the issues raised by citizens and to protect the capital Vilnius, would-be European Capital of Culture 2009, from further destruction.
